03:44 pm - [49] Kara/Leoben icons
I just made a ridiculous amount of Kara/Leoben icons. Mostly from "Maelstrom" (including extended scenes), but a few from "Flesh and Bone" and the first four eps of s3. Caps are mine, lyrics are all from Radiohead or Elliott Smith songs. Comments are great, credit is even greater.

[49] Battlestar Galactica (Kara/Leoben, Kara, Leoben)

10:19 pm - Armistice Day
"Thereupon Elrond paused a while and sighed.  'I remember well the splendour of their banners,' he said.  'It recalled to me the glory of the Elder Days and the hosts of Beleriand, so many great princes and captains were assembled.  And yet not so many, nor so fair, as when Thangorodrim was broken, and the Elves deemed that evil was ended for ever, and it was not so.'" -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

It's interesting that it's still the end of WWI that we commemorate with a federal holiday -- that it hasn't been either upstaged or effaced by the history that came after.  Granted that WWII ended twice, but still.

Kipling famously wrote,

If any question why we died,
Tell them, because our fathers lied.

It was part of a set, "Epitaphs on the War," most of which are in a similar line, and others of which are...other perspectives. Not conflicting, exactly, but different -- including the voice of one or two people who felt their military experience had been so gloriously transformative as to make the subsequent gore and death irrelevant.  And then there's this:

THE REFINED MAN

I was of delicate mind. I stepped aside for my needs,
Disdaining the common office. I was seen from afar and killed. . . .
How is this matter for mirth? Let each man be judged by his deeds.
I have paid my price to live with myself on the terms that I willed.
