I leave tomorrow evening for London... back July 11th. In the meantime, I will have no phone access, but I will have my laptop and presumably internet access (provided the hotel doesn't charge exorbitant rates to connect).

See you all when I return!

11:00 pm - If Pirates of the Caribbean 3 was a student in my class...
Dear Pirates,

Although you have the beginnings of an interesting argument, your thesis lacks clarity. What exactly are you trying to say? Remember, you must channel your observations into a cogent analysis; otherwise, I am left to wonder, "so what?" Additionally, your potentially intriguing points are frequently being obscured by grammatical error, excessive wordiness, and awkward sentence construction. While I give you credit for the prettiness of Orlando Bloom, I cannot overlook your overall lack of direction.

'cause [info]imagisme did it first:

A meme in which you TELL me if you want me to put down a bunch of weird and random information.
So comment, and I'll comment back with the answers.

1. Tell you why I added you to my friends list and/or why I keep you there.
2. Associate you with something. A song, a color, a work of art, a character in a play, a piece of fruit. SOMETHING.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you/us.
5. Associate you with a character from a book or a film.
6. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you. (Or else I'll just ask a random question. I reserve that right.)
7. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
8. In return, you must spread this disease in your LJ.

From England's Calamity Foreshewn in Germanie's Miserie, an Exclusion crisis anti-Catholic text:

Catholics ostensibly tortured Protestant women by "t[ying] burning matches to the tongues, noses, eyes, cheeks, breasts, and legs: Yea! And the privy parts of women they stuffed wtih gunpowder and fired!"

Ouch. Maybe not quite as bad as the guy who poisoned his wife with the ground-glass mutton dildo. But ouch nonetheless.

Aggressive Alpine Skiing.

And the hour of my life I will never get back.

Thanks Kirk. Or Mike- I can't remember who discovered it.

08:02 pm - More sick musings
I am still beplagued and may finally go to the doctor's tomorrow if considerable progress is not made. :(

I finished Silent Hill 4 today (hooray for easy mode)-- and may I say that I'm really irritated about the ending? I don't like it when games have multiple endings and you can only get the "good" ending if you accomplish certain objectives during the game (except that said objectives are not apparent unless you read an entire walkthrough, thereby negating the purpose of playing the game).

Anyway, I need a new game to play since I'm clearly not accomplishing any actual dissertation work. Suggestions? Would I like God of War? I bought it for [info]doongar for Xmas, discovered he already had it, and never got around to returning it.

Oh and in other news, the new season of Rome premiers in just over a week. Squee!

LKH is apparently having a public meltdown over negative reactions to her latest books:

http://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/2006/12/dear-negative-reader.html

It's like watching a bad car crash.

On this blog other famous authors, including Nora Roberts, MaryJanice Davidson and P.C. Cast weigh in on the debacle.

Meanwhile, VH1 is up to season 7 of America's Next Top Model. I still think Caridee was the wrong choice. Melrose was robbed, even if she sucks as a person.

I think my brain is starting to atrophy from disuse. And congestion.

Why is it that every time I get sick, there's an America's Next Top Model marathon on VH1? I swear, this is the 3rd time in a row. I'm going to start getting paranoid...

09:06 pm - Odds and ends
I cracked and bought the latest Merry Gentry book with an xmas gift certificate (so it's not as bad as if I cracked and used my own money) Now I'm officially done with the series. Yes, I know I say that all the time, but this time I mean it. Anita gets one more chance, but Merry I am done with. I don't think I can even make myself finish the book, it's that bad.

Since I have the following image engraved on my brain, I will share it with you all-- add this to the list of Things LKH Inexplicably Thinks Are Sexy:

"Mistral thrust his tongue so deep and hard into my mouth that it was like oral sex when the man is too big for comfort. If you can fight it, it hurts, but if you relax, sometimes, you can do it. You can let the man have his way with your mouth without breaking your jaw. I'd never had anyone kiss my like this, and evn as I fought to let him do it, I thought about him being this forceful with other things, and the thought made me open wider to him... I could barely breathe with his tongue down my throat."

Um, ew.

In other news, The Compass Rose by Gail Dayton is excellent. [info]imagisme and [info]doongar might remember this book: We were at Barnes and Noble and I couldn't remember the name or author of the book I was looking for except that it had compass somewhere in the title, and Kristin somehow miraculously managed to locate it. Anyway, it's been sitting on my shelf for probably over a year now, and then today I read it in one sitting. Awesomeness. I bought the sequel tonight with the rest of the xmas gift certificate.

And in still other news, I fit into size 8 jeans today. On the one hand, that feels like quite the milestone- single digit sizes. On the other hand, I'm experiencing a weird disjunction between what I expected a size 8 to be and what I actually look like. As someone who has always been a size 12 (I was a size 12 by the time I was 11), I've always thought of size 8 as an unattainable, insanely small number. Now that I am there, I don't feel all that small. Not in like a body dismorphia sort of way or anything-- I can see how much smaller I am than I used to be-- but insofar as realistically, Victoria's Secret won't be hiring me as a poster girl any time soon. And I guess what's interesting about the whole thing is that it sort of brings home how unrealistic Hollywood standards of thinness really are. When Titanic came out, everyone discussed how "healthy" Kate Winslet looked, that she was normal person sized. But then I read recently that she was actually wearing a size 4 in that movie. Sort of puts size 8 into perspective.

I'm also sort of nervous that this whole weight loss thing can't last-- buying size 8 jeans feels like I'm courting disappointment. But I suppose it's just a matter of maintaining my new approach to eating. *crosses fingers*

1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die: http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm/content_id.22845/Books

This list bothers me. This is exactly the sort of logic that turned the Trivial Pursuit Book Lover's Edition into such a miserable failure. The list is obviously heavily weighted towards contemporary fiction and suggests that you're not well-read if you haven't enjoyed the complete works of Philip Roth, Salman Rushdie, or Ernest Hemingway. And God forbid you have an interest in or preference for genre fiction instead of literary fiction.

Anyway, I've bolded the books I've read. I've only read 126 of them, which isn't a great percentage for my 5 years of graduate education. But without further ado, here are The 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die )

Laurell K. Hamilton posted this on her blog the other day:

"Eighteen pages today. Tired. But I'm hoping that by tomorrow morning I'll be ready to go again. Why the pick up in speed? Big Edward scene, I'd hoped the pace would pick up, and it did. Cool. I can now say for sure that Olaf is going to be in this book, because he's been on stage. So for all you guys that have been asking when, and what book will Edward and Olaf be in? Answer; this book, The Harlequin, which is the official title."

This gives me hope. Unless Anita has sex with Olaf, in which case I'm done with the series forever.
